Vitiligo is a
skin condition that allows loss of its pigmentation cells (melanocytes), which
can create discolored patches in different areas of the body. It is a long term
skin condition resulting to the skin or hair turning white. I have just a
friend who had it, and since we became friends years ago, I thought it was a
special kind of birth mark and also assumed she survived a fire outbreak in a
unique way; there was also a myth that she ate something which was an abomination
in their given tradition.
Many times, I wondered how that came about and she was
always able to patch it up with make up as it was on a part of her face. There
was one thing I found amazing, which was the fact that it never affected her
self esteem.
This condition is caused when one’s immune system mistakenly
attacks some part of his or her body. Research has it that, for some it could
run in their families (with children less prone to getting it); here are few
key points to note about VITILIGO:
SIGNS:-
· *White patches especially when exposed to sun
· *It doesn’t really occur in children but once you
approach your 20s’ into 30s’ and notice any change in your skin, it is
important to seek medical attention.
· *It is mostly found around the eyes, neck,
elbows, hands and knees and even the genitalia amongst others.
|
HOW IT’S DIAGNOSED:-
· *Via Family history recorded, *skin reactions, *blood or skin sample tests of the affected areas and eye examination.
TREATMENT:- While considering all forms of treatments, it is important to note that it relatively differs on persons and their skins.
· *Creams , Drugs (Ultraviolet),
· *Color removal from other areas,
· *Surgery, tattooing relative areas of the skin,
· *Sunscreens , application of makeup / cosmetics,
· *Counseling
· *Eat right. Eating a minimum of 5 walnuts everyday is advised. This can also be applied as a paste and used on affected areas 3-4 times daily.
My friend’s condition cleared, which means that there is a possibility it does to some people as well. It can reduce one’s self esteem but with the right mindset, environment or counselors to guide the affected parties through, there is no cause for alarm and yes! It doesn’t kill or cancerous as some feared.
